deb penk Artist Studio and Gallery
Born in the small town of Thorp, Wisconsin, I learned to survive boredom by – what else? – CREATIVITY! Complaining to mom about being bored always brought about doing dishes or painting walls, so I created a diversion of my own. I was the oldest daughter of 5 siblings, 3 being challenging brothers, so life was far from dull!
Book reports, term papers and even algebra assignments were enhanced with doodles and drawings to further entertain the teachers. Curricular, extra–curricular and even extra–extra–curricular activities taught me to appreciate our greatest source for entertainment – PEOPLE! I began carrying a camera everywhere I went, long before it was practical. Humorous antics were caught in focus and out, stacking up sources for thousands of paintings to come.
With a Commercial Art degree in hand, I moved to Menomonie (Me–No–Money) at the other end of Wisconsin, earning a BS in Art Education. Poverty and “struggling artist syndrome” were overrated, so I waved goodbye to bribes of a Masters Scholarship and moved to Wyoming. A land, Wyomingites warned, where “Men are Men, and sheep run scared!”
Those wide open spaces, prairies, mountains and wild cowboys caught my artistic eye. That craving for something new and different was satisfied! Armed with my camera I found exhilarating reference material and craved to put it all down on canvas.
Teaching soon collided with my desires to paint, and sticking to my motto “I’ll try anything … ONCE!” I retired my chalk stick and went forth seeking my 15 minutes of fame.
Thank goodness for friends and good natured people who allow me to capture their true essence, as that is what life is all about… FUN!! If you take time to look, it’s all around us, with plenty more to come!
Life is too short to sit on the sidelines – GET IN AND PLAY!
